LETTER: OUTRAGE OVER PRICE GOUGING AS STORES JACK UP COSTS AHEAD OF PASSOVER
Sent in to nunu
Dear Nunu,
I’m writing with a real concern that many in the community are feeling but not everyone is saying out loud.
We are constantly encouraged to support Jewish businesses and buy from our own. Many of us take that seriously. But at the same time, we are seeing a troubling pattern. Prices go up specifically before Yom Tov, especially before Passover.
Food prices suddenly double. Basic necessities become significantly more expensive right when families are already under financial pressure preparing for the holiday.
And it’s not just food. Even services like haircuts. Barbers are charging higher prices the week before Yom Tov, clearly taking advantage of the increased demand.
How is that fair. How is that aligned with the values we’re being taught.
If we are expected to support each other, there has to be mutual responsibility. Taking advantage of people right before a major Yom Tov puts a real strain on families.
We all believe in supporting Jewish businesses. But it has to go both ways.
Sincerely,
A concerned member of the community
